I mentioned in a previous post how Shazer has been super into planes and aviation lately, well ever since he read about the Wright brothers gaining their earliest interest in flight from flying kites he has wanted to fly a kite. We've had this great pterodactyl kite since Shazer was about four and we had taken it to the beach on vacation and had lots of fun with it. We tried to fly it in Chandler on a somewhat breezy evening a few weeks ago but it wasn't quite windy enough to get it up in the air. When we decided to go to LA I thought we could bring it along and fly it on the beach again. Well, there was no going to the beach this time because of all the rain and we had a seriously disappointed Shazer.
If you have ever driven on I10 from Phoenix to LA I'm sure you've noticed the 4,000 windmills near Palm Springs. As we drove by on our way home everyone was asleep except for me, Jon (who was driving) and Shule (playing his DS). Shule commented about how this would be a good place to fly a kite. And I thought, "Why not?" Although it took Jon a minute to be convinced- it was so quiet and peaceful with everyone asleep and we knew that as soon as we pulled over they'd all wake up and most likely wouldn't fall back to sleep (and they didn't) but I thought- hey they can sleep anytime, but this would be memorable. So we pulled onto the next exit, found a fairly safe place to park that didn't have a lot of power lines and we let the kids fly the kite for about 20 minutes. There were some pretty intense winds and it scared the little girls so they stayed in the van most of the time with Nana. I thought it was refreshing, although, my hair became a huge tangled mess. Shazer was ecstatic and Shule was pleased as punch that it was his brilliant idea :)
So much fun!

That's awesome. We drove that route on several occasions, but it never even occurred to me to get out...WAAAYYY to windy. I'll never forget one trip though, our car was getting thrown around by all the wind knocking us from side to side...then Jim says..."maybe they should turn all these fans off and it wouldn't be so windy." I was cracking up.
