Since Halloween was on the Sabbath this year we decided to skip the trick-or-treating and just have a little family party at home and pass out candy to other trick-or-treaters. I had to take advantage of my last photo opp with the kids in their sweet costumes before the sun went down.
Too bad we didn't realize Shazer was missing his hood.
Decorations ready for the trick-or-treaters.
Witch's hair (aka dyed spaghetti).
Potions (aka soda) to drink, witch eyes and fingers (olives & pickles) and mummies (hot dogs wrapped in bread stick dough) for dinner. By the way, the witch's hair did NOT go over well- the color was just way too off putting for the kids, although Jon and I thought it was delicious ;) The big hit for the kids was the hot dog mummies- they gobbled those up fast. They loved the silly names for everything. Although Sally kept having to reassure herself... "that's not really witch hair, right mom?"
"Eye Scream" (lifesaver gummies with a choc covered raisin in the center and vanilla pudding molded and frozen in an egg carton.
"Brains!!" Sally's favorite, "that's really watermelon... right mom?"
"Apple Spider" for Sophie
Bobbing for apples
Shule played too but for some reason my flash didn't go off so his pictures didn't turn out.
Sally gave a worthy attempt but eventually cheated and grabbed it out with her hands.
Sophie didn't even try it with her mouth but she sure got soaking wet ;)
Forty-five minutes after dark and still no trick-or-treaters. The girls decided to practice with each other. We figured that we wouldn't get a whole lot of trick-or-treaters because our street is the farthest back in our housing development but we thought we'd get more than 3 (which was the final total for the night). We'd even bought candy because we didn't want to take from the kids but now we've got enough to last until next year. So if anyone needs a sugar fix- you know where to come :)
FINALLY, our first trick-or-treater! A cute little dinosaur that's Sophie's age from four houses down that we see all the time going to the park with his Grandma. Sally was thrilled and every kid gave him some candy. Then nothing again for another fifteen minutes. Then I thought about the other houses on our street that were decorated so nicely for Halloween and how all of those new neighbors of ours were having the same experience of waiting anxiously for virtually no one. So we decided to go meet some of our neighbors. We left a bucket full of candy at the door and went trick-or-treating on either side of our street. And we're so glad we did. We met some really nice people and they loved seeing the kids all dressed in coordinating costumes that they could easily recognize. Some people were even waiting in their driveways and door ways for trick-or-treaters! We saw a few more kids out on the street, but there were so few that when we got back, the candy in the bowl we'd left out wasn't even noticeably taken.
A few more things I want to remember. Sophie's "twick-o-twea" was SO cute! Shule bailed on us after just going to the houses on one side of the street and Shazer was ready to be done a few houses later! My kids just don't have the drive for free candy that my brothers did- every year they were the first kids out and the last kids in and they would come home with huge pillowcases full of candy. Sally wanted to keep going but we just wanted to hit the houses on our little deserted street so we took her to a couple around the corner and then came home. At one neighbors house, Sally had a melt down because Shazer rang the doorbell and she had wanted to, so the nice old man closed the door and waited for her to ring the doorbell again. So nice :)
I didn't get any cute sleepy pictures because we got back home pretty early and got them out of their costumes and into their pajamas before they started getting really sleepy. We'd had so many sweets we decided to hold off on the donut on a rope game until FHE tonight. It was a very fun and memorable Halloween. Hope yours was too!
