This year's Pumpkin Walk at Shazer's school left much to be desired. I guess I can't complain too much because I didn't volunteer to help out with it, I felt like it was the most we could do to just go and be supportive this year.
The school has been under construction since school started; they're replacing portables with a whole new wing of classrooms, more parking spaces, and a new primary playground (because they had to take out the old one to make room for the new classes). It should be nice when it's finally done but in the mean time it's been kind of a bummer because there's less space.
In the past they've had hayrides and a costume contest (Shule won last year's Best Homemade Costume award and Shazer was really hoping to take it this year), and there would be neat jack o' lanterns (that students would bring) lighting the paths all around the school. This year, no hayride, no contest, and there was a significant decrease in the amount of pumpkins on display.
There were the usual jumping castles, but this year our boys felt too big for that and our girls were too intimidated. There was face painting- but who wants their face painted when they're already in costume? There were little bean bag toss, bowling, and fishing games, but the lines were long and excitement low. There was a book fair going on at the same time, but the book Shazer wanted had already been sold out. The pizza wasn't that great and they usually have a cotton candy machine (which is always Shule's favorite part) that also failed to make an appearance.
On top of all that, the boys friend, Maguire, who we'd brought along, had been planning on meeting a girl that he hadn't seen for a long time, and upon meeting her she somehow "totally dissed" him so he wanted to leave after only being there for about 10 minutes. He kept asking if we could leave and we basically told him to suck it up. I think we held out for another 20 minutes- after Sally had "swam" in the sand on the playground in her new, white Bo Peep costume and almost lost her shoes because she buried them in the sand in the dark. Gotta love her ;)

Is it bad that I knew who Shazer was without explanation? Gotta love that Middle School angst! (Well actually, it's not that loveable. But it comes with the territory anyway.)
